Computer Requirements
CodeSpace works with most computers, but there are a few specific requirements that must be satisfied for correct operation.
Gear Up!
- Our kits come with everything you need, including hardware, cables, and sensors.
- Each student will need a computer with a recent version of the Chrome web browser (v65 or later).
Computer / OS:
- Chromebooks work great – just make sure they are up to date.
- To check, type chrome://help in the address bar of Chrome.
- Windows 10 should work with no additional USB drivers needed.
- Mac OS X 10.13 and later should also work with no additional drivers.
- Windows 7 or prior unfortunately will not work.
- VMware thin clients will require a USB forwarding rule configuration for the micro: bit devices.
- Linux OS is also supported! See here for configuration details.
Notes:
- When the CodeBot or micro:bit is plugged into a computer, it will appear as a USB “mass storage device” - just like a flash drive. This is not required for normal classroom use! So don’t worry if your school has a policy preventing flash drives, students will still be able to use their devices.
Chrome OS
- For the best experience in CodeSpace, we recommend the latest stable version of Chrome.
- If you're in a school, it's likely your Chromebooks may be "managed". Here's some helpful info on making sure the administrative settings allow Chrome to be updated: Troubleshoot Chrome Devices (opens in a new tab)
- You can also check which "channel" you're getting updates on with the instructions here: Operating System & Browser (opens in a new tab)
